Why do they put carpet in bathrooms

Why do they put carpet in bathrooms
BHL | 11 Aug

Carpets and bathrooms - we hardly find any logical, sensible, and practical affinity between the two. Yes, it is very understandable that some people love to decorate their modern bathroom with colorful carpets from wall to wall for various purposes (we will talk about these advantages later for your kind information).

However, the demerits far outweigh the merits. It would be really nice to walk out of the shower glamorously and amorously naked and walk to your towels in a sexy manner - a luxury and happiness under your feet, the plushy feeling, no fear of slipping on the floor because of the carpets underneath. Or, perhaps you enter the bathtub like a king surrounded by your women giving your bath sitting on carpets around the tub!

Well, these ridiculous scenes will only appear for about ten to fifteen seconds on the screen during a movie or TV drama. If you are going to use wall to wall carpet in your bathroom to get the same feeling, then you should also get ready for the mold infestation.

The regular moist environment makes the use of carpets on a bathroom floor an utter impracticality. It is a luxury that only a select few in the world would try, not everyone.

You will need to prepare a lot of things to keep the carpets dry like a desert to ensure a healthy environment in your bathroom - you need to install a high capacity exhaust fan, buy a heater and invest time to properly dry the carpet. You may need to hire a helper full time just for this reason!

If you have never experienced bathroom accidents like leaks, that can happen from anywhere (we mean ANYWHERE! Like your toilet!), you would not understand why carpet and bathrooms are not a good match. In this article we try to answer - ‘why do they put carpet in bathrooms’, and also discuss the merits and of course, the demerits of using carpets in bathrooms.

Bathrooms and carpets: the archenemies

We have to admit, carpets do bring a very nice aesthetic feel to your home, and even in a bathroom they look fabulous if properly matched with other items and their colors. There was a time when carpet really was an item of luxury and out of reach of average families. Only the rich would dare a wall to wall carpeting at their homes.

However, after the development of science of technology in this field, carpets became accessible to many who were not able to buy them before. After the war the world saw a prosperity that pushed many to do the unimaginable - putting carpets in their bathrooms.

They would enjoy the plushy and comfy feeling under their feet - a luxury you can show off to others (only if you can discard the possibility of a mold attack).

It looks and sounds nice, we admit! However, when a poll was taken online, only about 8 percent of the participants said using carpets to be nice in a bathroom. The fantasy of a carpet laid bathroom was crushed by the 92 percent opposing votes!

It has been a while since people have stopped using wall to wall carpeting setup in their bathrooms. Although many ‘70s practices are making re-appearances in the world, unfortunately this one trend may never come back again!

You can do whatever you like with and in your bathroom - like hanging an expensive naked or half naked painting, or setting up some flashy countertops, or flower vases - but laying wall to wall carpet in your bathroom? You should never dream of it. Little area rugs are ok! They are really helpful to dry the wet soles of your feet when you come out of the shower.

They are practical and useful. Or, you can also use bath mats that are washable. You can wash and hang them to dry! However, wall to wall carpets are not for modern day homes. This old luxury is a history that should not revisit the world of the sane people!

Nowadays, the people in the real estate business think of the wall to wall carpet in a bathroom as a grim reaper.

If you have carpets like that in a home, it is not considered sellable. As homes grow old, even without carpets, molds infest them. On top of that, if there is a wall to wall carpet, then it will be like a mold forest. You would rather make it a greenhouse to grow mold, moss and fern and forget selling the house ever again! Molds are the natural nemesis of a real estate property.

Carpet hosts a friendly environment for molds. You may take a long shower, and your bathroom carpet will trap moisture. Soon, you will find that your bathroom is nurturing more mold than any penicillin lab, although you deploy an exhaust fan and heater. Thicker and softer carpets may feel so soft and comfortable, however they are dangerous in bathrooms.

Laying carpets on the floor is not a joke. The carpet is actually tightly nailed to the ground, and you cannot easily remove them even if you want to just for a few minutes so you can treat the mold infestation. As a result, molds will only spread to the farthest corner where there is less activity.

Anyway, you will be thankful for the act of not laying the carpet when your toilet leaks! That will be the epitome of a disaster. However, there are people who love their carpeted bathrooms. According to them, carpets in the bathroom have some advantages.

Advantages of Carpets in Bathrooms

  1. With carpets, your bathroom can become warm and inviting on cold days.

  2. Carpets are softer than tiles, so people will not get hurt on carpets.

  3. People often slip on the bathroom floor. Carpets can prevent that from happening.

  4. Carpets are easy to install and the process is quick and not too expensive.

Disadvantages of Carpets in Bathrooms

Carpets accumulate a lot of moisture in them in various ways. For example, from shower steam, water splashes from shower or tub, shedding of water when you come out from the shower or the bathtub, water from the sink or toilet. In the end, these are reasons why people put carpet in bathrooms.

In short, carpet is not a viable decoration element for a bathroom. You use water in the bathroom, and water makes your floor wet. It does not matter how cautious you are during your washing, water drops or drips will find their way to the floor.

If you have wall to wall carpet, you are actually inviting molds to infest your bathroom. It is better to use smaller fluffy area mats in certain places in the bathroom but not wall to wall. We hope you now understand why it is not a good idea to put carpets in your bathroom.
