Valves are very important in a system that deals with liquid or gas flow. Without it the flow of liquid or gas will not be controllable. In a system like this you will have many valves to maintain and manage the flow of gas or liquid objects. Mechanical object, in this case, a valve is made to regulate, direct and control the flow of liquid and gas objects by closing, opening, or partially stopping it. They can be made from bronze, brass, PVC, etc.
Valves are used in both commercial and residential buildings, wastewater treatment plants, water supply, chemical plants, factories. Valves can turn off access to liquid or gas, stop backflow, direct the flow, and adjust liquid or water pressure in a system.
There are various types of valves:
Gate valve
Butterfly valve
Ball valve
Globe valve
Pressure relief valve
Let us know a bit about all these valves.
The first one is the gate valve. These valves are widely used in plumbing. There is a metal gate shaped like a wedge. You can lower it by twisting a handle or a knob and turn on or off the flow of water. You cannot control flow with this valve, you can either fully open or close a pathway for the water flow.
If you try to adjust the flow of water, the valve may wear out. This type can only open or close a circulation of air, fluid, fuel, steam, feedwater, hydrocarbon, and lube oil. There are a few distinct types of gate valves: solid, flexible, OS&Y, split, and non-rising gate valves. Gate valves do not impede the flow of liquids or gas.
This valve also prevents the hammering sound of water by modifying the water pressure within the pipes. There are few disadvantages like wearing of valve’s seat leading to a weaker valve seal and reduced efficiency. Besides, it takes some time to manually lower or raise the valve’s gate.
To allow and inhibit the flow of liquid, this valve uses a metallic disc, and an illusion of a butterfly is created. This is the reason why it is called a butterfly valve. This valve is lighter, more compact, and shorter compared to other valves. There are various types of butterfly valves: zero offset, double offset, triple offset, flanged ends, wafer type ends, lug type ends, and butt-welded types.
These valves are lighter and not that much expensive, and their compact size made them prevalent in the industrial sector. There are some disadvantages also, such as, need to replace the gaskets, a drop in pressure of the liquid regulated by the valve, slower operation, less durability, etc.
Among all the valves out there ball valves are the most common and reliable type of valves. This valve is also used to control the water flow within a water system. This valve has a sphere that has a hole; this hole is connected to a lever handle with which you can use the valve. When the regulatory handle is used to open the valve, hole in the sphere is lined up with the pipe and the water flow.
On the other hand, if you close the valve the hole will move away from the water flow thus restricting it. The handle of the lever shows if the valve is open or closed. There are various types of ball valves: 3 way, 3 piece body, trunnion mounted, floating, side entry or split body. Ball valves provide excellent sealing in a really closed position; they are smaller and lighter than same sized and rated gate valves. One disadvantage is that ball valves cannot provide precise control over the flow of liquid.
In plumbing applications you can use globe valves to limit or regulate the flow of water in places where you need to regularly adjust the flow. The valve stem has a stopper at its end. You can raise or lower it with the twist knob of the valve. Due to the ball or globe like shape of the body, this type of valves get the name ‘globe’. These valves are often seen in use for faucets outdoors or faucets with the same type of use.
There are three types of globe valves: z type, y type, and angle type. You can use this valve where you need regular adjusting and partial opening of the valve. These valves have easy maintenance, effective shutoff and throttling abilities. This valve has one disadvantage - these valves cannot be opened fully.
To reduce pressure in a plumbing system pressure relief valves are used. You can control water pressure according to your need, and protect your pipe system and equipment from leaking or being permanently damaged. The mechanism of this valve involves an adjustable diaphragm and a spring. You can be in total control of the water pressure through your pipe system.
You can also call them pressure balancing valves, or pressure safety valves, or pressure reducing valves. There are various kinds of pressure reduction valves: reclosing type, non reclosing type, safety relief, pressure relief, vacuum relief, and pressure vacuum valve. This type of valve is very reliable if you can maintain them regularly.
They are versatile and that is why they are in use in firefighting, water towers, high rise buildings, water tanks, and drinking water applications. However, there are some drawbacks such as pressure reliefs due to backpressure, susceptibility to chatter due to high back pressure, etc.
Feature of Brass valve
